Theo Chocolate Field Trip
Two coworkers organized the most brilliant outing ever: a tour of the Theo Chocolate Factory in Fremont. I took the afternoon off to join about 10 of my coworkers on what proved to be a delicious and fascinating tour.
It became clear early on that Theo really takes pride in what they do. They are true chocolate makers, starting with beans from places like Venezuela and Madagascar. They roast the beans in the former home to Redhook Brewery in Fremont on retro machines imported from Europe. Theo, named after the scientific name for the cacao plant, Theobroma cacao, boasts that they are "...the first roaster of Fair Trade Certified™ cocoa beans and the only roaster of organic cocoa beans in the United States."
As you can tell by my enthusiasm, the tour was quite effective at convincing me that Theo Chocolates are amazing. The one-hour tour was led by a spirited young woman with a permanent smile and lungs that could carry her voice over the Wonka-esk whirring of the machines. She might have been able to fly. Theo offers tours to the public for only $5. Along the way, we sampled everything from chocolate nibs (the roasted meat of the bean) to their latest confections. We got to wear stylish hairnets too.
Theo Chocolates are sold all over, but here in New Seattle, you can find them at Whole Foods, PCC, and Metropolitan Market. I also highly recommend taking the tour.
